Peptides are high-value, sensitive raw materials. How you store and handle them from receipt to formulation directly affects purity and shelf-life. Here is a practical guide.
Storage of the raw material
- Keep containers sealed and away from moisture — many peptides are hygroscopic.
- Store cool, dry and away from light. Follow the supplier's stated storage conditions on the COA/TDS; some peptides are best kept refrigerated or frozen, others are stable at controlled room temperature.
- Do not decant into unlabelled containers; keep the batch number with the material for traceability.
Handling in the lab
- Let refrigerated/frozen material equilibrate to room temperature before opening the container, to avoid condensation drawing moisture into the powder.
- Weigh quickly, reseal promptly, and minimise exposure to humid air.
- Use clean, dry tools to avoid contamination.
In the formula
- Add peptides late (cool-down/water phase) and keep processing temperatures moderate.
- Keep pH in a mild window; extremes hydrolyse peptides over time.
- Always run stability and preservative-efficacy testing on the finished product, and set your shelf-life on real stability data.
Shelf-life and retest
Respect the retest/expiry date on the COA. If material is near or past its retest date, ask the supplier about re-analysis rather than assuming it is still on-spec.
